Potrero Hill

Potrero Hill is a popular location among young families and urban professionals.

Welcome to Potrero Hill

Potrero Hill is a hilly residential neighborhood in eastern San Francisco, flanked to its east by the San Francisco Bay. Reaching an elevation of 320 feet above sea level, homes in this neighborhood enjoy fantastic views over the Bay and city skyline. Potrero Hill is bordered to the west by U.S. Route 101 and Potrero Avenue, with 16th Street to the north, and Cesar Chavez Street to the south. Potrero Hill is located just south of SOMA and Showplace Square, with the Mission District to the west.

Potrero Hill’s real estate is a mixture of classic Victorian homes and modern condominiums, along with some custom-built properties. The most sought-after homes tend to be those on Potrero Hill’s North Slope, which typically feature well-maintained gardens and enjoy excellent proximity to Downtown SF.

What to Love

  • Excellent weather—Potrero Hill is one of San Francisco’s sunniest neighborhoods, and it’s largely insulated from the famous SF fog.
  • Quiet residential atmosphere in close proximity to some of the city’s busiest neighborhoods.
  • Magnificent views of the city, Bay, and Twin Peaks.
  • Fantastic transportation links, with access to two freeways and a Caltrain station.

People & Lifestyle

Perfectly balancing a central location with residential calm, Potrero Hill is a popular location among young families and urban professionals. Laidback local cafes and dive bars give the neighborhood the authenticity of a real San Francisco community, being frequented by locals much more than tourists.

Unique and Authentic Neighborhood Attractions

While Potrero Hill has a mostly residential character, there are many businesses and hip restaurants, and nightlife spots within the neighborhood. These are mostly concentrated on 18th Street. Blooms Saloon is a popular bar with a patio offering incredible views. Mission Hills Saloon is another laidback bar with an authentic and inviting atmosphere. Farley’s Cafe is a neighborhood favorite, pairing espresso drinks with delectable organic treats in a setting displaying work from local artists.

Away from 18th Street, Potrero Hill’s other entertainment spots include Bottom of the Hill, described by Rolling Stone as the best live music venue in San Francisco and the heart of the city’s indie scene. The Anchor Brewing Company gives guided tours of its breweries and a chance to sample uniquely Californian Steam Beer.

Potrero Hill’s northern side slopes directly down to downtown, putting all of San Francisco’s most popular entertainment districts within easy reach. The south slope leads to the Dogpatch district, a trendy area where former shipbuilding warehouses have been converted into art galleries and hip nightlife spots.

Vermont Street is well worth a stroll, with many switchbacks providing ever-changing views across the city. It’s similar in nature to the better-known tourist attraction of Lombard Street, but a lot less crowded.
